Man's best friend

Ever since I was a little kid, I have been wanting a dog so badly. I am a HUGE animal lover! When Dan and I were first married we had a kitten named Milo and a sugar glider (a flying squirrel) named Frodo. Dan hated Milo and it was so hilarious because, of course, Dan was his favorite person. But sadly, we had to get rid of our little pets because we became resident assistants of our apt. complex and we couldn't have animals anymore. I have been begging Dan for a pet since then, and he has been a little reluctant because Milo ruined him. Now Dan hates cats because of Milo, but he was kind of a naughty little kitty. Usually, Dan tells me, "What sweety wants, sweety gets." So I could have gotten another animal when we moved out of those apartments, but I wanted him to be as equally excited about having an animal as me.

I have been gone traveling a lot this summer, leaving Dan here at home alone. And he sure has gotten lonely and he decided we needed a little friend. Now Dan wants a dog too!! Hooray! Dan is starting to realize how lonely I will be while he is in medical school so he really wants to get me a cute little dog. Dan has his heart set on these English Bulldogs:

They are really cute...when they are babies.
Dan would beg to differ, but I don't really think they are that cute as adults.

Although I love big dogs, I want a small dog for now 'cause we will be living in an apt. for a little while longer. I also want a friendly, good natured dog. Neither of us know much about dogs, and we need a little help deciding so we don't end up with a mean or yappy dog. What do you guys think we should get?

I love labs. my whole life my family has had labs...over time we have had 2 black ones and 2 yellow ones...my mom still has 1 yellow one at her house in texas. they are really smart and so good with kids. my little sister has taught the yellow lab they have now (her name is angel) how to swim in our pool...it's so cute. i guess i am just biased since that's all i've really known. when we get a house in texas eventually i want 1 yellow lab, and 1 chocolate lab. there's my two sence! are you guys getting excited to move? have you decided what city you are going to be living in??

I'm excited for you guys to get a puppy! They really do help keep you company and can be very theraputic! Just beware, puppies are SO MUCH WORK! It's almost like having a human baby the first few months. I would definately research crate training as it has worked the best for us, and you can train in a litter box with puppy pads so that you don't have to take your dog outside all the time if you want.

As far as breeds, it's all a matter of opinion. If you want a small appartment dog that doesn't shed and is super cute I'd say get a yorkie!

We love our Lab Annie but she is big (70 pounds) and she sheds and "dig and chew until they're two..." is an understatement! Ask Aunt Geniel about her Yorkies. They are small and adorable. The litter box thing would be a life saver! It is sooooo not fun to have to take the dog out!

A dog is like a kid - when we got Annie it was like I had 7 kids. (I was already up to 6 with Mike...) Good luck!

Keep the "what sweety wants, sweety gets" attitude going. It sounds like a winner!

I would go with a dog that will match your lifestyle (i.e. one that is not too energetic since you will be living in an apartment). Bulldogs are a good choice for apartments since they are a very lethargic breed and are fairly easily trained. But they are expensive to buy and keep. Other small breeds that are easily trained (don't have the brains breed right out of them) and don't have to much energy are papillions (mines an exception aparently from the ppl I've talked to and the info I've read. I got the short stick of the litter :/ ), French bulldogs and pugs (may have health problems simular to that of english bulldogs but not as expensive to buy), pomeranians (for the most part), Shelties (more energetic and will need daily walks and park time but extremely smart), then the many poodle mixs out there are a good choice (poodle mixs have the advantage of few health problems associated with purebreeds, non shedding and poodles are very intellegent for small breeds, so it can add some trainability to some breeds that have had there brains breed out of them in order to get "miniturized" versions. So if you do choose the english bulldog I would be wary about the miniture versions since the only characteristic the breeder is looking for is size and not health, personality, or trainability. From what I know of Dan I think an English Bulldog would fit him.

I don't like dogs. Actually, I love other people's dogs, just not sure I'd ever own one. Not much help, I'm sure.

I have to agree with you, that dog is not cute grown up. My parents have a little maltese, she is the cutest thing in the whole world, I think!

I say if your going to get a dog. Take one of ours. They are trained, already obnoxious, beg for food, dig up the grass, bark all night, get hair all over, constantly need a bath, stink, bring in dead birds and leave em on your pillow, get outside the fence and we spend an hour trying to hunt them down, shots, haircuts, fleas, the whole works, what more could you want? You can have gunner for free!

my family had a mini schnauzer forever (he just barely died) and he was such an awesome dog. really mellow, didn't shed tons and stayed pretty small. Yorkies are also a favorite. Just don't get a jack russell terrier. Yes, they're the cutest dogs in the world but they are CRAZY! Way too much energy ALL the time.

Hey! It's Rachael White... I found your blog through the Boyer's blog. I don't know much about dogs, so I can't offer any advice. Good luck trying to decide on that. We missed you last night and this morning! Tell Dan thanks for the donuts! They were so good! Anyway, have a great day and see you tomorrow!

I got your email last week, but I headed out to girls camp and didn't have time to respond. It looks like you guys had a great time. We will have to go to dinner when you and dan come out here.
Oh, the dog is totally cute too. Good luck with everything. Hopefully we will see you soon.
